The Fourth Gear Flyer Standard set the bar for high performance surfmats in 1984, and nothing has changed in the ensuing 25 years. Experienced mat surfers riding the best waves look to the Standard for their ideal mat. It maximizes the potential for top end speed on overhead waves, and tracks through tubes like it’s on rails. Ideally, the Standard rider is between 135 and 175 pounds. But any size rider can surf a Standard effectively as long as there is enough grunt in the ocean to get it rolling. (If it’s 8 feet, a 250 pound mat rider can rip on a Standard!)
